San Jose is a proud city that is home to many renowned athletes, teams, and fans. From the Sharks hockey team and Earthquakes soccer club to the Giants minor league baseball team, the area has cultivated an impressive sports history. San Jose can boast of its two famous Olympians, John Carlos and Tommy Smith, who made history in 1968 with their iconic black power salute, now represented in a statue at San Jose State University. Other notable athletes from the area include Brandi Chastain (soccer), Kristi Yamaguchi and Polina Edmunds (figure skating), Aaron Gordon (basketball), and the late Bill Walsh (football). Plus, the city has celebrated hot dog eating contest champs Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie as local heroes.
From 1996-2005, Spartan Stadium hosted the San Jose Clash, later renamed Earthquakes, and since 2008 Avaya Stadium has been home to the Earthquakes. The venue has also welcomed many international teams and games for the USA men’s and women’s national teams. San Jose certainly has a lot to be proud of in terms of its athletic presence!

Notable San Jose Giants alumni include Madison Bumgarner, Pablo Sandoval, Buster Posey, and Tim Lincecum. Additionally, San Jose has had the privilege of partnering with some of the biggest sporting events in the nation such as the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, NCAA basketball games, the College Football National Championships, NHL All-Star Game, and Super Bowl 50.
